Inside the station is Nagoya Umaimon-dori, a row of Nagoya-food restaurants (Taiko-dori side, 17 shops); on the Shinkansen side is the ESCA underground mall; and 1 minute from the west exit is Bic Camera Nagoya Ekinishi (10:00–21:00 every day, tax-free). It suits travellers arriving by Shinkansen and leaving the next morning, or planning several day trips.

Sakae is Nagoya's downtown. It has Oasis 21 (the underground Ginga Plaza is open 6:00–23:00, free), the Chubu Electric Power MIRAI TOWER (in December 2022 the first tower designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan; observation deck 10:00–21:00 on weekdays and Sundays, 10:00–21:40 on Saturdays) and Hisaya-odori Park, renewed in September 2020. Osu is the area around Osu Kannon, a Shingon Buddhist temple, and the shopping streets in front of it, with electronics stores, vintage clothing shops and street-food stalls. The main hall of Osu Kannon is open 6:00–19:00 and free, and an antique market is held on the 18th of every month. In a November 2024 City of Nagoya survey of 463 international visitors, 40.8% had been to Osu. Yabaton's Yaba-cho Main Store (miso katsu; founded in 1947; 11:00–21:00, open every day) is near Kamimaezu and Yabacho. The Osu shopping streets are 2 minutes' walk from Exits 8 and 12 of Kamimaezu Station, and Osu Kannon 3 minutes from Exit 2 of Osu Kannon Station.
