Nagoya in winter: December–February temperatures and what to wear, what closes over New Year, and how to spend cold days

According to Japan Meteorological Agency normals (1991–2020), Nagoya's coldest month, January, has a mean temperature of 4.8°C, an average daily high of 9.3°C and an average daily low of 1.1°C. Snow is light: the normal monthly total of snowfall depth is 4 cm in January and 5 cm in February. Over the New Year, some sights close, such as Inuyama Castle (29–31 December) and Higashiyama Zoo (29 December – 1 January), so check before planning. On cold or rainy days you can stay indoors at Nagoya City Science Museum, the Port of Nagoya Public Aquarium or the Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology. This article explains how to plan a winter trip to Nagoya.

How cold is Nagoya in winter?
| Month | Mean temperature | Average daily high | Average daily low | Precipitation | Snowfall depth (monthly total) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| December | 7.2°C | 11.7°C | 3.4°C | 56.6 mm | 3 cm |
| January | 4.8°C | 9.3°C | 1.1°C | 50.8 mm | 4 cm |
| February | 5.5°C | 10.5°C | 1.4°C | 64.7 mm | 5 cm |
What should you wear?
With an average January low of 1.1°C, bring a thick coat, gloves and a scarf if you will be out in the morning or evening. Daytime highs average 9.3°C, so layers you can take off indoors are most comfortable. Winter precipitation is about 50–65 mm a month, so there are rainy days too; a folding umbrella is handy. With a washing machine at your stay, you can wash and rewear clothes instead of packing many thick layers. On day trips to the mountains, such as Takayama or Shirakawa-go, it can be colder and snowier than Nagoya, so check official information and the forecast for your destination.
What if it snows?
Nagoya's normal monthly snowfall depth totals are 5 cm or less, so days with settled snow are few. Even so, snow makes streets and station stairs slippery. Wear shoes with good grip and check train and bus service information before you set out. If you are staying several nights without changing hotels, you can switch a snowy day to indoor sights nearby.
